ROOF NET INSTALLATION ADVICE
Introduction
A net suspended above a roof will prevent birds from getting access to the roof. The birds might still land on the netting itself initially, but being up in the air they will be exposed to the elements, which will soon encourage them to seek other places to settle.

Some Considerations
- Ensure nets do not sag down to roof level when gulls initially land on them - suspend the nets > 40cm above the roof
- For gull nets use 75mm net horizontally and 50mm net on vertical or angled sides
- Use Stainless Steel 3mm wire rope and M8 fixings and barrel strainers for roof nets
- Fit a counter-tension wire to all perimeter Roof Mounts
- Use a separate strainer for every straight run of Wire Rope
- Use a separate section of net for each plane of the installation
- Hog every mesh to the wire rope at the perimeter of each net section; if crossing over support wires with a large net, hog every other mesh to the cross-wire to minimise chafing
- Ensure all materials used for birdproofing are compatible with the building substrate material
- Determine whether access is required for maintenance after installation of the net
- When designing roof net installations, ensure the roof can take the weight of the roof net components along with wind and snow loading
- Ensure no damage is caused to the roof due to the bird proofing equipment or during installation of bird proofing equipment
- Check whether there are trees that might damage the net
- Work at height, and particularly on roofs, can be very hazardous, and some of the materials for roof nets can be heavy or awkward. Ensure all installers are appropriately trained in health and safety and suitable PPE and access equipment are used
- Ensure your insurance covers you for work at height and on roofs
- Ensure approval by local authority building department if required
- When fitting Roof Mounts on sloping roofs it is recommended that the bases are anchored in place so that they cannot slip
- If existing infestation is heavy then you might need more mounts to take the weight of birds that will initially land on the net
